I. HCSM President’s Retreat - August 5-6, 2006

HCSM is pleased to announce the 2006 HCSM President’s Retreat at William O’Brien State Park in St. Croix, MN on August 5-6, 2006.

The purpose of the President’s Retreat is to initiate a strong network among incoming 2006-2007 school presidents/chairs/representatives of surrounding colleges and universities in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. The two-day retreat will focus on the importance of networking and how it relates to community empowerment. This will be achieved through cooperative learning, healthy discussions, and team-building exercises. Participants will strategically plan ideas, events, and programs that emphasize the importance of education and/or community activism on the campus, local, and state level. HCSM will establish a networking contact list that participants will be able to utilize throughout the school year.

All expenses (transportation, lodging, food, and supplies) for this retreat will be paid for by HCSM, however, priority will be given first to those holding official positions within their school organization next year, but HCSM encourages all to apply.

The deadline for HCSM President’s Retreat Application Form is Friday, July 21st at 4:00 pm. Send applications via email to: hcsm@hcsmstudents.org (This method is preferred). If you’d like to send it via air mail, mail out your application before Tuesday, July 18th to ensure the application is received before July 21st. You’ll be notified by Tues. III. CHAT’s 5th Annual Hmong Arts and Music Festival – August 26th

CHAT’s 5th Annual Hmong Arts and Music Festival will be happening on August 26th. They are searching for artists and asking for your help in getting the word out.

There are two options for artists: submit work to the Featured Exhibit at the Festival OR show off and sell their work in a vendor booth. OR…do both!

The Featured Exhibit is based on this year’s theme: The Hmong Chronicles. The Featured Exhibit will use art to serve as documentation of this very significant time in our history: the Hmong from the refugee camps in Thailand have come to merge with Hmong-Americans. This very much anticipated reunion has created a ripple in the settlement of the Hmong-American community and has triggered yet another evolution in the development of our people. Artists are asked to capture this moment and all that it encompasses in their artwork.

Please help CHAT spread the word so student artists can be featured at the festival! Contact Kathy Mouacheupao at 651-603-6971 or kathy@aboutchat.org for more info.

The positions will allow you to work in schools and communities to develop opportunities for children and youth and to build resources for organizations to become more effective with youth. They have 5 openings (1 at Jackson Street Village a Wilder supportive housing community, 2 at Public Housing communities, 1 at Dayton’s Bluff elementary School and 1 at Cleveland Jr. High) this coming fall.

Also, their next round of Leadership Skills for Success, a 6-month leadership development program, begins in October, and they are in the process of developing a newly configured Youth Leadership Initiative that will foster personal and leadership development in multicultural and cultural specific groups. Wow this is very interesting. I hope in the near future Hmong NC would come up with something like this. I am very proud of us Hmong taking a role in our community.
