Thank you to everyone who attended the Thank You Volunteers Gathering earlier this month. With the help of dedicated HCSM members and volunteers, we were able to have a healthy and lively discussion on the direction of HCSM.
As you all may know, elections for next year’s board is coming up very soon. The elections meeting will be held on Saturday, April 28th at Augsburg College. We would like to encourage you all to nominate anyone you think may be qualified to run as well as self-nominating yourself. Also, if you have elected your own school organization boards, we invite you to attend the meeting so that you may select HCSM school representatives for the next school year. Please see below for more details.

I. HCSM Elections Meeting: Saturday, April 28th, 2007 at Augsburg College
The HCSM Elections Meeting will be held on Saturday, April 28th, 2007 at Augsburg College from 12:00 – 3:30 pm. This elections meeting will determine next’s year board.
The term starts on July 1st, 2007 and extends to June 30th, 2008. The positions and both nominations and self-nominations will be available on our website by Sunday, April 22nd. To accept your nomination, you must complete an online application form that will also be available by Sunday, April 22nd. Please stay tuned and let us know if you would like more information or have any questions.
To be eligible for a position, HCSM requires candidates to:
1) Have attended 2+ HCSM events
2) Have a 2.25 GPA
3) Be enrolled in a college/university for the 07-08 school year.
4) Will not go off-campus in the 07-08 school year.

II. University of Wisconsin – Stout “Hmong Awareness Week:” April 30th – May 5th, 2007
The University of Wisconsin – Stout Hmong Stout Student Association will be holding their “Hmong Awareness Week” from Monday, April 30th to Thursday, May 3rd, 2007. The events are as follows:
Monday, April 30th:
Hmong Cultural Show @ 7 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Student Center (MSC)
A fun filled evening with Hmong dance performances, a short skit called “Journey to America,” a fashion show of the different Hmong traditional wear, and an informative PowerPoint presentation about the Hmong culture.
Tuesday, May 1st:
Play: “Stir-Fried Pop Culture” @ 7 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Student Center
“Stir-Fried Pop Culture” is a play from the Twin Cities written by May Lee Yang, a Hmong writer and community activist. It is a play about the Hmong culture and has been presented at various events in the twin cities. The play consists of humor and a twist of old culture and new culture.
Wednesday, May 2nd:
Egg Roll making @ 6 p.m. in the Curran-Kranzusch-Tustison-Oetting’s dormitory Kitchen
Come learn how to make egg rolls and you get to eat them too!
Thursday, May 3rd:
Social Justice – Tou Ger Xiong @ 7 p.m. in Ballrooms BC of the Memorial Student Center
Tou Ger Xiong is a Diversity Consultant, Comedian, Storyteller, Rap Artist & Actor that will present a workshop about Social Justice regarding the recent Hmong issues such as the shooting in Rice Lake and in Green Bay. He will talk about what took place at both shootings, how the Hmong community reacted to both incidents and how the general public viewed it. This will be an interactive and informative event.
Saturday, May 5th:
Come join the Hmong Stout Student Organization (HSSO) as they aim to educate you on traditional Hmong wedding ceremonies through a series of workshops that will take you through the preparation process of a Hmong wedding, what kind of roles play a part in these weddings and the exploration of the significance of wedding songs (zaj tshong) at the HSSO 21st Annual Educational Conference “Hmong Wedding 101: ‘Txiv, kuv coj nyab los lawm’” on Saturday, May 5th, 2007 from 9:00am - 4:30pm in the Great Hall of the Memorial Student Center (UW-Stout).
They have three very credible and intellectual speakers that will educate and answer your questions relating to Hmong weddings: Vam Ntxaij Yaj, a Hmong Language & Culture Teacher from Minneapolis, MN; Doua Vang, a teacher and a mejkoob (marriage negotiator) also from Minneapolis, MN; and Chao Xiong, mejkoob (marriage negotiator) from Eau Claire, WI.
The highlight of the day will consist of a traditional Hmong MOCK WEDDING, put on by HSSO members! Lunch & entertainment will be provided and will be free! Anyone Everyone is invited to come. You may RSVP through Facebook or email HSSO at hsso@uwstout.edu

Position Title: West Side Summer Camps – Youth Group Leader (3 positions available)
Reports to: All Around the Neighborhood Summer Camps Coordinator
Position Dates: June 4th – August 31st approx. 5 hours per day
Salary Range: $10.00-$12.50 per hour
Job Location: Various locations on the West Side of Saint Paul
Job Summary: Coordinate all program activities within one of three youth groups during the All Around the Neighborhood Summer Camps. Ensure the implementation of planned activities. Provide leadership to summer camp youth, staff, and adult volunteers. Enforce program and agency guidelines. Act as a positive mentor to up to 40 children.
Primary Responsibilities (all responsibilities carried out with an assistant group leader):
* Ensure that participant data is managed and secure;
* Communicate with program participants, staff, parents, and volunteers throughout AATN;
* Provide leadership and serve as a mentor to program participants
Required Qualifications:
* Strong prior experience volunteering or working in a youth development or related field
* Past experience working with or coordinating volunteers
* Bilingual in Spanish, Hmong or Somali language preferred
* Class D Minnesota Drivers License and a clean driving record
* Documented leadership skills
Special Skills and Abilities:
* Ability to work with children/youth from diverse, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds
* Good communication and listening skills, verbal as well as written
* Ability to relate well with children, adults, and parents
* Strong organizing skills, detail oriented. Ability to manage multiple aspects of a project at the same time.

V. Internship Opportunity: HBS Summer Venture in Management Program (SVMP): Application Deadline is May 10th, 2007
The Summer Venture in Management Program (SVMP) is a week of Harvard Business School (HBS) instruction for high-potential college students in the summer between their junior and senior year designed to introduce them to the HBS MBA experience and the variety of opportunities a degree in management can afford. Participants from non-traditional backgrounds spend the week on campus living the MBA student experience, attending classes, analyzing case studies, and debating management issues with peers and faculty.
The application for the 2007 Summer Venture in Management Program is now available online. Completed applications are due May 10, 2007 at 5:00pm EST (Boston time).
