HCSM September Bimonthly Digest 1 September 16, 2007

Hello Everybody!!

We want to graciously thank those who volunteered at CHAT’s Arts and Music Festival (08/25/07) on behalf of HCSM. It was a great opportunity to get the word out about HCSM as well as getting to know other organizations and programs available in the cities. Coming this September 29th, is the 6th Annual Hmong Resource Fair, they still need volunteers so if you’re interested, please find in the attachment the volunteer form and let HCSM know that you’re considering helping out!

Currently, the Public Relations Chair position for HCSM is open, so if you or anyone you know is interested, please contact us as soon as possible for more information! We hope you consider this carefully, for we are excited and would love to welcome you aboard! Also, keep an eye open for our first HCSM Statewide Meeting coming soon, we’ll keep you posted.

Now that school is back, we bet you it’s been mighty busy getting situated and shifting towards back-to-school mode. We feel you, and so let us assist you in getting things going for the new school year! In the following, we have new opportunities for you to give back to the community, earn some points on your resume, and maybe even be documented! Please take a look below and enjoy the beginning of your school year!

III. Tutors wanted for Hmong YES

Hmong Youth Education Services (Hmong YES) is looking for college student volunteers to work with Hmong students in grade K-6. This would be a great opportunity for you to get involved in the community. Deadline for accepting tutors is October 1, 2007. The mission of Hmong YES is to nurture and develop successful Hmong Youth through education programs.

The benefits of volunteering:
• You will be giving back to your own community.
• It’s a great way to gain experience outside of the college classroom.
• Participating in extra curricular activities is vital to building your resume.
• It’s an opportunity for you to work with professionals in the non-profit sector and acquire a reference and recommendation letter for future employment.

The Tutoring Program utilizes college students who provide tutoring services to children at their school/homes twice a week for two hours each session. There is no charge to the youth and families for this service. Most families are at or below federal poverty income levels as evidenced by the children receiving free or reduced price school lunches. Most of the children are also new refugees and need as much help as possible to bridge language and social barriers.

The goals of TP program are to:

• Help each youth complete his/her homework.
• Read with a youth for 10 minutes each night.
• Teach and encourage good study habits.
• Teach and help each youth plan his/her short-term goals.
• Become a friend and a positive role model.

Tutoring Program Sites
We have four sites for our Tutoring Program

• Como Park Elementary School
• Phalen Lake Elementary School
• Hmong Youth Education Services office
• Home Tutoring
